Whatever works...

So my schedule this week has been:

Monday: rest
Tuesday: 40 min tempo
Wednesday: 7 km steady
Thursday: rest
Friday: 5 km steady
Saturday: rest or cross-train
Sunday: 16 km LSD

The 40 min tempo and 7 km felt great. It was the silly 5 km today that felt hard. I really battled to get it done. First, I asked a friend to heckle me out the door. She told me if I did my run, I could eat chocolate. OK, that's good...that got me to the gym. Started trudging along on the TM and felt like crap. Told myself that I could take a walk break after 10 min, and if I still felt crappy, I could switch to the bike. Made it to 15 min, but still felt blah and need more motivation. Okay, time to use my imagination. Crank up the speed a bit. What's that noise around me? People cheering...it's a marathon! And I'm running at Boston-qualifying pace! There's Cliff jumping on the course to pace me to the finish...come on, Anners! You're almost there! Crank up the speed a bit more. I see Tony with the camera! I see the clock...it reads 3:37:45...I can make it...yes! I did it! Boston, here I come!! (More cheering from the crowd.)

In reality I was merely trying to finish my 5k run at a moderate pace. Yes, not quite the pace required to qualify :) But hey...if my little fantasy helps me to get my workout done, it's all good! Whatever works!

Sometimes we just gotta do what we gotta do to get the job done. :-)
